Secret Garden

A “Secret Garden”, hidden in plain sight by Amsterdam’s prettiest canal in the bohemian Jordaan buurt.

“Pocket-sized Planting”

Secret gardening is not just about pottering picturesquely in the herbaceous borders, it’s a pocket-sized challenge to create a blooming microclimate.

Even a small garden design needs great planning principles

which focus on a unified and balanced space to cultivate a thriving little Eden.  “To convert this small space into a lush garden, we need a good mixture of flowers and regular plants which are robust and won’t be stolen – that is why I’m planting the hottest chili peppers.”, says a streetwise Secret Gardener.

Our ancestors were capable agriculturalists, who had a close relationship with the land, earth and nature, and used native seeds.  The fundamentals of contemporary landscape design and successful planting will be the crowning touch of the Secret Garden.

Spatial composition and horticultural science of planting zones & calendars, pollinators & perennials, decoding symbols on plant tags, and the forage for a magnifying glass to read small-print instructions on seed packets, is altogether a herculean effort for our Secret Gardening heroes.

After keeping their spirits topped-up at Café Chris HQ, our Secret Gardeners have fallen short on garden space, energy, money and sports viewing time.  It’s a panic buying dash to the local garden centre, to pick the best of the bunch from a budget selection of plants for easier cultivation.

The Secret Garden planting party have turned-up, to turn-out potted plants.  Our best-laid landscaping plans are supplanted by flashes of inspiration prompted by a thunderstorm, and the creative spontaneity of freestyle planting and seed scattering is watered by summer rain.
