“The Secret Plot”
Bloemgracht’s motley crew of secret gardeners are enthusiastically digging the dirt to start a micro-garden revolution.
These ‘Knights and Damsels of the Neighbourhood’ wield garden tools
on an inspiring quest to expand garden access, shining a light on how different types of space can be transformed for public benefits. A bird’s eye view of a patch of derelict land barely measuring 150 cm x 275 cm, and an idea has grown for a garden to blossom amidst a sea of concrete and bicycles.
Whilst diminutive in size, it’s plenty big enough for a showpiece micro-garden. After much musing and carousing at Café Chris the local Robin Hoods are feeling the flower-power. Full of ‘Dutch courage’, our merry band of gardeners launched a brazen, noisy foray to occupy this scrap of land.
“I’m overwhelmed it was all quite so easy. I expected some more resistance” says a Secret Gardener, who is as exuberant as his colourful odd-socks. The guerrilla garden land-grab has uplifted all of us with boundless energy and excitement to create our first small-scale ecosystem.
“Why stop in the Bloemgracht?! This is the impetus for micro-gardens to spread across the world”, a flourishing statement from a floral-shirted Secret Gardener. Neighbourly spirit overflows as a core group of neighbours commingle contributing labour, materials and plants for the Secret Garden.
Grassroots community-building starts with a victory post hammered into each corner of the Secret Garden plot by our kaleidoscopic attired Secret Gardeners. Bloemgracht’s newest canine residents, Twinkie & Hershey show their approval of the workmanship. “And so it begins. We Are A Go-Go-Grow!”
